The start of the New Year is a catalyst for change. A change in how we manage our health, our career and our relationships as evidenced by our New Year's Resolutions.

Was one of your New Year's Resolutions to leave your partner?

Are you finding it daunting to go through the process or don't know where to start? Do you worry for the impact on children and/or the family business?

Or have the costs involved with divorce relegated you to staying in an unhealthy relationship?

Family Dispute practitioner and lawyer of 30 years, John Bickford, has launched a new service for couples, enabling a smoother, more amicable and low cost path to separation.

With offices in Brisbane and Noosa, Bickfords Family Mediation is on a mission to bring people to the table before they become warring parties, and has recently started practice in Noosa.

During his time as a mediator and lawyer, Mr Bickford says his experience has shown that there is always a better outcome with mediation than would usually be achieved through litigation, which always brings with it financial and emotional costs.

"Unless there are special circumstances such as domestic violence or child abuse, parents should not litigate over their children and a mediated outcome will always be less dramatic for the children whose interests are paramount," says Mr Bickford.

With more than 30 years experience in family, commercial and property law, Mr Bickford notes that there is often dispute around property and businesses that would benefit all parties if managed with the same process.

"Mediation is an opportunity for parties to resolve conflict between themselves by coming to an agreement, with the mediator acting as a facilitator.

In the event of a matter going to family court, a trial date can be set as much as two years away, ensuring a lengthy and sometimes increasingly bitter separation with important matters left unresolved," he says.

Mr Bickford says that while the law now requires parents to at least attempt mediation prior to filing Family Court applications for children's matters, the fact is mediation offers a swift low cost resolution.
